Johnny Ring was signed from Aberavon Rugby Union Club in 1922 and in his ten years at Wigan Rugby Club he became a legend. In fact his name still appears in the records to this day, because he scored a club record 62 tries in season 1925-26. This record has been challenge ever since but it is unlikely to ever be beaten. In his ten years at Wigan every time a Wigan match result was printed in the paper, the names of Sullivan and Ring seemed to appear. Only once did Johnny score less than 30 tries in one season and some of his statistics follow:
On 38 occasions he score 3 or more tries in a game, and on 3 occasions he scored 7.
His 368 tries in his Wigan career is second only to Billy Boston.
He scored 40 or more tries in a season five times.
Topped the RL try scoring charts for four consecutive seasons from 1922-1926.
Wigan had spotted Ring playing in his native Wales and noted the fact that he had scored an Aberavon club record of 76 tries in 1920.
A Great Britain tourist in 1924, Johnny also represented Wales, Other Nationalities and Glamorgan. He lost his place in 1932 and was transferred to Rochdale Hornets before retiring.
